The Coronation Mantle

Next

The Coronation Mantle was woven by St. Stephen's loyal wife and partner, St. Gisela. It is worn about the neck and shoulders during coronation ceremonies, but is little used in other functions. It was part of a complete set of ceremonial coronation clothing, but it is the only piece which survives today. Even this was found by chance, buried underground with no protection from the elements.

The mantle has a sacred motif; angels surround God, glorifying Him, and saints display His power. Gisela wove from beautiful and rare gold, blue, purple, green and red cloths; sadly, the green, which was the predominant color, is today faded extremely into yellow.
